make-a-breakfast-barBreakfast bars seem to be all the rage. One of the best ways to build a breakfast bar can be to use older cabinets that have been removed from other areas or were purchased at a yard sale. Building a breakfast bar can be easy, cheap, and fun if you tackle it from a common sense point of view.

A breakfast bar is a very convenient thing to have in your kitchen or dining area. Building a breakfast bar from cabinets is handier still since you have some storage area beneath it.

If your breakfast bar will be against a wall, as most will, then the backing isn’t a problem, however if it will be an island you’ll need something to back with, such as a sheet of inexpensive panel board, or one of the faux brick.

Find a local thrift store or a yard sale where you see used cabinets. I found two there that were the standard height, which is about 28-36 inches tall.  With two shelves inside each one, they were extremely handy to use.

Using twelve of the L shaped brackets you will secure the cabinets to the flooring, then the countertop that you select to the top of the cabinets. Frankly thats about all there is to building a cheap breakfast bar.

Build a breakfast bar for under 200 dollars very easily.  You can add the electrical outlet by attaching to an existing outlet on a wall, or if you like running up through the floor if you’ve chosen an island type breakfast bar.

Select some shorter stools, such as the 27 inch ones for your breakfast bar. They are the perfect height and will hide nicely under your breakfast bar when you’re not using it.

The total cost to build a breakfast bar in this way will vary but here is what ours cost.

19 dollars x 2 for the bar stools
25 dollars x 2 for the cabinets
62 dollars for a piece of remnant countertop in deep blue
(if you’re going for a nicer look, select a granite or soapstone and splurge a little)
16 dollars for the L shaped brackets to secure it all.
25 dollars for casters (we wanted our breakfast bar to be movable)

As you can see, the cost of the breakfast bar was actually nominal. It gave us far more space for eating in the kitchen and it added cabinet space to the house so it does double duty.
Build a cheap breakfast bar for Christmas and give yourself some extra storage and eating space.
