All of the rage a few years ago, southwest styles for your home. Lately you don’t read a great deal about it, but the truth is that if you really want something warm and inviting, easy care and easy living, southwest style is for you.

Not to mention Southwest decorating has become a bit less common lately so frankly, if you like to be unique, then probably Southwest style is going to be right up your alley so to speak.

I love to make the eye of God decorations, the small painted vases and the sand paintings that turn the room into something unique.

Whats involved in decorating southwest style? Lots of woods, native American accents, earth tones and natural products are what you want to use to get the look that is going to stand out and make your home a conversation piece. Wrought iron or wood clocks make the decorating scheme look old time authentic.

To begin with you want to make what accessories that you use really stand out and show themselves. One way to do that is to make a neutral backdrop for them, but one that really shows itself as a southwestern or western type background.

What I used was Behr paints, which make some amazing colors, but not just the colors really lend themselves to this type decorating, but also their new texture paints.

My selection was a light tan, and over it, I used Behrs Sand wash, which actually puts a light coating of real sand onto the wall. It not only looks southwestern but in reality, it makes your walls nearly impervious to chipping or nicks or scratches. They wash well, they wear like iron and you can’t beat the price or the look when you’re done.

With this kind of a background, one that truly lends itself to the Southwestern styling and offers the look of the clay or adobe homes of that area, you’ve got a great start toward your decorating and can move onto the furniture and accessories.

Southwestern furniture is going to be heavier, chunkier, lots of rough woods and sturdy pieces.  If  you are decorating on a dime, chances are good that you cant’ really replace what you have now, but you can dress it up, perhaps using some brightly colored woolen blankets or faux woven Native american blankets draped over the back of it for the effect. Just a few fabric touches can make a world of difference.

If a Native American print throw rug or accent rug is in the cards for you by all means, grab one. The accents are what make the room.

If you’re particularly crafty, one of the most lovely accessories I’ve personally ever seen was a hand painted  canvas floor cloth. They wear forever and they aren’t at all difficult to make. we’ll address how to do that in  another article.

I’ve also found some super bargains, wonderful looking designs and ceramics at some neat little sites online, including my favorite Southwestern Decor.com You’re going to love the products and the prices. (LOL nope we’re not affiliates but if we could be we certainly would be)
A few accessories such as this situated around the room are going to offer an authentic look and feel to oyour southwestern style. Don’t neglect the little touches of comfort that will make the room either. IF you can find some great heavy weight Native American print fabrics, make a few toss pillows to throw around the room for comfort and looks.
